Check your company nameकम्पनीको नाम जाँच
Type up to three names. Each one is checked against OCR's naming rules as you type, and written in Nepali for you. Then we search the OCR register and reply on WhatsApp within one working day.
The rules we check as you type
- A private company's name ends in "Private Limited" (प्राइभेट लिमिटेड), and a public company's in "Limited". The ending can only come last.
- A not-for-profit company carries no ending unless OCR approves one.
- Every company needs a Nepali name as well as an English one.
- A one-word name is accepted only if that word itself says what the company does.
- The name cannot match, or be confusingly close to, an existing company, a company closed in the last five years, or a registered trademark. OCR ignores the ending, "The", "New", "Shree", punctuation and small spelling differences when it compares.
- A name that suggests a link to the government, misleads about the business, or uses a well-known person's or organisation's name is refused without their written consent.
- Once OCR approves a name, the registration papers must be filed within three months or the name can be cancelled.
Words that need care
| Word in the name | What happens | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bank, Finance, Financial, Bittiya, Laghubitta, Microfinance | Not allowed | Only institutions licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank may use these words, and they must be public companies (Bank and Financial Institution Act 2073, Section 32; Companies Act, Section 12). |
| Insurance, Bima | Not allowed | Only licensed insurers may use these words, and insurers must be public companies (Insurance Act 2079, Section 24; Company Directive, Clause 20). |
| Securities, Stock exchange, Mutual fund | Not allowed | These businesses must be public companies with a licence from the Securities Board (Companies Act, Section 12). |
| Cooperative, Sahakari | Not allowed | Cooperatives are a separate legal form, so the word misleads in a company name (Company Directive, Clause 20). |
| Government, Sarkar, Ministry | Needs a licence or approval | A name suggesting a link to the government or a public body needs that body's written consent (Company Directive, Clause 20). |
| University | Needs a licence or approval | OCR refuses names that mislead about what the company is (Company Directive, Clause 20). |
| Remittance, Remit | Needs a licence or approval | Remittance is an activity licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank; a name that claims it needs the licence behind it. |
| National, Rastriya | OCR may ask | No rule names the word, but OCR refuses names that suggest a government link (Company Directive, Clause 20). |
| Capital, Investment, Holdings, Fund | OCR may ask | No rule bans the words, but fund-raising and investment management are licensed activities. |
| Hospital, College, School, Hydropower, Airlines, Manpower | OCR may ask | These sectors are licensed. Where the law needs approval before registration, it is filed with the application (Companies Act, Section 4). |
| Association, Federation, Society, Foundation, Trust, Sangh | OCR may ask | Not written in the Act or Directive, but OCR commonly refuses these words in practice. |

Whether a name is already taken, or too close to one, can only be searched in OCR's own system, so we search it for you.
Questions
How does OCR decide a name is too close to another?
It compares the names without the ending (Private Limited or Limited), without "The", "New" or "Shree" at the start, and without punctuation. Small spelling or sound differences do not count. So "New Himalaya Traders" clashes with an existing "Himalaya Traders", and "Sagarmatha Dairy Private Limited" with "Sagarmatha Dairy Limited" (Company Directive 2072, Clause 21).
How long does an approved name last?
File the registration within three months of OCR approving the name. After that the Registrar can cancel it, and someone else can take it (Company Directive 2072, Clause 21). We file well inside that time.
Do I need a Nepali name too?
Yes. OCR takes every company name in both English and Nepali. We write the Nepali spelling for you as you type; change it if you want a different spelling or a Nepali translation instead.
Can the name be one word?
Only if that word itself says what the company does. "Sagarmatha" on its own would be refused; "Sagarmatha Traders" or "Sagarmatha Digital Solutions" is fine.
Can I use my own name, or a famous one?
Your own name, yes. A well-known person's name needs their consent, or their heirs' written consent if they have died. A well-known organisation's or brand's name needs written permission from it, and that includes a foreign parent company's name.
Can I use "Nepal" in the name?
We found no rule against it, and many private companies carry it. "National" or "Rastriya" is different: OCR may read it as a government link. OCR decides each name, so we check it on the register before you rely on it.
Is there a fee to check or reserve a name?
OCR's published fee list has no separate charge for name approval; the registration fee is paid when the company is filed. Our name check is free.
